The UArtes Summer School is a Spanish program that offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the Ecuadorian and Latin American culture through the arts.

During four intensive weeks your experience is enhanced by attending lectures, concerts, workshops and hands-on classes led by some of today’s most prominent Latin American artists.

Cultural activities and field trips to discover Ecuador’s natural and cultural treasures will provide context and a stimulating cultural environment to improve your Spanish and get to know more about Latin America.

The program is designed to students from 18 years-old or older from diverse backgrounds who seek to improve its Spanish and get a cultural experience in Ecuador and Latin America.

Latin American Film (12 H)

This course is dedicated to the critical exploration of Latin American film, with emphasis on the so called New Latin American Film. It will explore the relationship of this wave of film with its own history, aesthetic ruptures, political approaches, forms of production, distribution, institutionalization and its horizon.

Performing Arts Workshop (12 H)

This workshop proposes a discovery from the somatic perspective through the work of corporal rhythm, energy and consciousness. At the same time, it provides a basic understanding of the function of the phonetic and amplification systems, which allow for the achievement of an adequate corporal and oral expressions for activities based on diverse forms of the spoken word, in an organic way and expressed in an emotive and imaginary format.

Engraving and Serigraphy (12 H)

This practical course will get you familiarized with drawing materials. It will also provide insight on how to transfer drawing to wood; moreover, learn about laser engraving and printing your work of art on paper, fabric or your own accessories.

Ecuador´s Ancestral Instruments (12 H)

This course initiates students in an understanding of the musical instruments from ancestral cultures and sound cosmographies of Ecuador. This close up to ancestral musical thinking allows composition and interpretation of these originating instruments to become part of the students’ everyday life and a holistic view of sonic art. Participating students will also learn to build and perform as part of the marimba ensemble. Marimba music of Ecuador and Colombia is considered intangible world heritage by UNESCO in 2015.

Introduction to the Arts in Ecuador and Latin American in the 20^th century (12 H)

This course explores the Ecuadorian artistic landscape, from its relationship with the artistic expressions of Latin America. It includes an approach to urban art and a tour of its main expressions within the city. Students will have the opportunity to paint a mural in one of the neighborhoods where the university conducts community outreach and cooperation programs.

Ecuadorian Literature (12 H)

This course introduces students to Ecuadorian literature through revising different types of work, life and motivation from the most representative Ecuadorian authors.  This course will be given within the framework of an editorial international gathering called Libre – Libro. This year marks the centennial of his death; therefore, this event will be especially dedicated to the memory and work of the famous Ecuadorian writer and poet Medardo Ángel Silva.

Spanish as a Foreign Language (12 H)

Through this course, students will be able to improve their linguistic skills in Spanish from Latin America, according to their level: Intermediate (B1) or Advanced (B2), accompanied by a program of artistic appreciation and cultural immersion about Ecuador and Latin America.

The program consists of 148 hours (3 credits). At the end of the program, UArtes will provide a certificate of attendance. The students must have 80% of attendance and have obtained at least 8/10 in the evaluations.[:es]

El Programa internacional Escuela de Verano 2020 es un programa de inmersión en la cultura ecuatoriana y latinoamericana a través de las artes, de cuatro semanas, dictado en español. Estos cursos se complementarán con excursiones para descubrir el Ecuador.

El programa está dirigido a estudiantes extranjeros que deseen fortalecer sus habilidades en el idioma español a través de las artes.

CINE LATINOAMERICANO (12 h)

El curso propone una exploración crítica del cine latinoamericano, con énfasis en el llamado Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano y girará en torno a: la relación del cine latinoamericano con su propia historia, las rupturas estéticas, los planteamientos políticos, las formas de producción, circulación, institucionalización y su horizonte.

TALLER  DE CREACIÓN TEATRAL (12 h)

Este curso práctico propone una exploración desde lo somático al trabajo de ritmo, energía y conciencia corporal.    A su vez brinda conocimientos básicos del funcionamiento del aparato fonador y resonador,  con lo cual se pueda desempeñar una expresión corporal y oral adecuada para actividades con diversos formatos de voz hablada, que sean de un modo orgánico y articulado a su expresión emotiva e imaginaria.

GRABADO Y SERIGRAFÍA (12h)

Este curso práctico ofrece un acercamiento a los materiales de dibujo. Los estudiantes obtendrán conocimientos acerca del traspaso del dibujo a la madera y el grabado en madera y láser. Al final del curso los alumnos serán capaces de imprimir su obra en papel y tela.

INSTRUMENTOS ANCESTRALES DEL ECUADOR (12 h)

Los estudiantes comprenderán la naturaleza de los instrumentos musicales de las culturas ancestrales y cosmografías sonoras del Ecuador. La aproximación al pensamiento musical ancestral posibilitará la composición e interpretación con instrumentos originarios.

INTRODUCCIÓN A LAS ARTES EN ECUADOR Y LATINOAMERICA EN EL SIGLO XX (12h)

Se propone una inmersión en el panorama artístico ecuatoriano desde su relación (o de la posibilidad de esta relación) con las expresiones artísticas de Latinoamérica. Incluye un acercamiento al arte urbano y un recorrido por las principales expresiones dentro de la ciudad. Los estudiantes tendrán la oportunidad de pintar un mural en uno de los barrios donde trabajamos nuestros programas de vínculo con la sociedad.

LITERATURA ECUATORIANA (12 h)

Este curso propone un acercamiento a la literatura ecuatoriana, revisando en cada clase la obra, vida y motivación de los más representativos autores ecuatorianos. Uno de sus cursos se dará en el marco del evento de editores independientes Libre-Libro, dedicado por esta ocasión de modo especial al poeta guayaquileño Medardo Ángel Silva.

ESPAÑOL COMO LENGUA EXTRANJERA (12 h)

Los estudiantes perfeccionarán sus destrezas lingüísticas del español de América Latina según su nivel: Intermedio (B1) o Avanzado (B2) acompañado de un programa de apreciación artística e inmersión en la cultura del Ecuador y de América Latina.

El programa equivale a 148 horas (3 créditos). Al final del programa se otorgará un certificado de asistencia. El estudiante deberá cumplir con 80% de asistencia a clases y obtener una nota mínima de 8/10 en las evaluaciones que corresponda.[:]
